SIGGRAPH 2020 Birds of a Feather

"Bridging the Gap" between Production and Technology

This will be a remote session on Tuesday August 25 from 10am-11am PT. A SIGGRAPH pass is required to attend, but the session is otherwise free of charge and open to whomever wants to attend. The panel is being finalized.

Currently, this is the ONLY Birds of a Feather discussion on this subject. The discussion will focus on production and technical lessons learned over the past 6 months of remote work, as well as problems we have not yet been able to solve. This is an open discussion, where we ask all of the participants to chime in with their experiences, challenges, and wins that they would like to share with the community. Our talks often move along organically, but we arrange a framework of discussion points to fall back on in case it's quiet.

Each year, we choose a topic that bridges the gap between production and technology teams. Historically, we have had about 100-150 professionals attend in person and this live remote session will be capped at 150 participants. We believe it will be recorded for others at SIGGRAPH to view.

Built on 2017 and 2018's "Bridging the Gap" discussion at SIGGRAPH, this year we will discuss how we manage consumption per job in preparation for the cloud. Studio render-capacity was defined by the limits of its on-prem farm. Submitting smarter will avoid runaway cloud costs. Artists, Production, Render-wranglers, and Technologists let’s discuss! "Bridging the Gap" between Production and Technology

One-page PDF on the Discussion

Based on 2017's "Bridging the Gap" discussion at SIGGRAPH, this year we will discuss both Production and Software Development scheduling challenges. This open discussion may provide unique solutions from each others' camp and at the very least, may strengthen empathy, understanding, and unity among Production and Technology members.
